Maritime industry explores nuclear power for ships as technology opens up

Jonathan Saul of Reuters reports that the maritime industry is exploring the use of nuclear power for ships.

  • Companies in Italy and the UK are making headway with nuclear fuel and maritime shipping and expect the technology to become viable in the next decade.

  • Bringing nuclear power to maritime shipping would reduce the need to refuel, increase cargo loads, and lower emissions.

“A survey in May by the International Chamber of Shipping association said nuclear fuel was being viewed with more interest than in 2021, with some seeing nuclear-powered commercial ships being viable within the next decade.”
