Reuters reports that Centrus Energy will begin nuclear fuel production two months ahead of schedule.
- Centrus Energy has developed centrifuges that enrich uranium to produce high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) which powers most advanced and small modular reactors.
- The U.S. currently sources its HALEU from other countries, largely Russia, which represents a national security threat and impediment to future energy innovation.
- This announcement is welcome news as the United States looks to advance clean, reliable advanced nuclear power.
“Centrus said the capacity of the 16-centrifuge cascade that is expected to begin enrichment operations in October will be about 900 kilograms of HALEU per year, but with sufficient funding and offtake commitments, production could expand significantly.”
