Rachael Wilfong writes in The Daily Signal about the flaws of increasing energy-efficiency mandates for dishwashers.
- The Department of Energy (DOE) has proposed a rule that would mandate tougher energy efficiency standards for dishwashers.
- DOE estimates that if this rule were finalized it would increase the price and installation costs of dishwashers by $8,000 per year, while saving individuals only $17 annually (less than $1.50 per month) through reduced energy costs.
- Some manufacturers have warned that these new mandates would lead to dishwashers being unable to clean or dry dishes efficiently.
- As is the case in the gas stove debates, consumer choice, not government mandates, should dictate what appliances are used in kitchens across the country.
“The proposed mandate would slash the limit on water use from 5 gallons of water per cycle down to 3.2 gallons per cycle, while simultaneously reducing the appliance’s energy consumption by nearly 30%. This will have real-world effects on performance.”
