James Morris writes in Forbes about a fusion reactor that could be commercially deployed in the UK in the early 2030s.
- TAE Technologies has built five experimental fusion power plants in California, one of which was able to reach 70 million degrees.
- The company uses boron-11 to power its reactor which is found in sand and is far cheaper than other fuels like helium-3 and tritium that power fusion reactors .
- TAE Technologies is looking to build a commercial fusion reactor by the early 2030s in the U.K., although the exact location has not yet been announced.
- If successful, this development will be a huge leap forward in accelerating a low-carbon energy future.
“‘Fusion can offer low impact, zero carbon, effectively limitless energy produced through a triumph of science,’ concludes Edelman. ‘It can do this without the drawbacks of most other sources of energy…Fusion can make up the yawning gap between the energy we know we need by 2050 and the energy that we know can be produced in low and no carbon ways by 2050.'”
