United’s $100M fund to invest in startups making sustainable jet fuel

Maria Gallucci of Canary Media reports on United Airlines’ efforts to advance sustainable aviation fuel.

The C3 Take
  • Commercial aircraft is responsible for 3 percent of the United States’ emissions.
  • United Airlines is partnering with JP Morgan, Boeing, and others to invest $100 million in various sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) startups.
  • Recently Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and Microsoft agreed to back Lanzajet to develop SAF, while Amazon has invested in Infium, a company that uses captured CO2 and hydrogen to make renewable electrofuels.
  • Private sector innovation is accelerating climate progress.

“Passengers who book United flights within or from the United States will also be able to contribute to the new fund by adding $1, $3.50 or $7 to their final ticket price. The gesture is likely meant to soften the “flight shame” that travelers might be feeling, albeit without directly reducing the planet-warming emissions generated by a particular flight.”
