Scientists develop new material for wind turbine blades that could be recycled into sweet treats

Deena Theresa writes for Interesting Engineering about wind turbines that can be used to make gummy bears.

The C3 Take
  • While wind energy is important in reducing CO2 emissions, the waste that old turbines generate is significant.
  • Researchers at Michigan State University have created turbines that can be recycled into new blades or other products such as car lights, building materials, or even gummy bears.
  • These blades are made with glass fibers and plant-based polymers.
  • While promising, the researchers have stated that more bioplastic production will be needed to bring their turbines to market.

“Scientists at the Michigan State University have created a distinct turbine material that can be revived and recycled into new turbine blades or a variety of other products, including countertops, car taillights, diapers, and even gummy bears.”
