Exclusive: Biden to waive tariffs for 24 months on solar panels hit by probe

Reuters’ Jeff Mason reports that President Biden will waive solar tariffs for certain countries for two years.

The C3 Take
  • President Biden has waived tariffs for panels manufactured in four Southeast Asian countries as the Department of Commerce investigates whether or not China has been circumventing American tariffs.
  • These solar tariffs have increased prices for consumers, inflated costs for clean energy projects, while providing negligible economic benefits to American solar manufacturers.
  • To accelerate the buildout of clean energy, Biden should end tariffs and engage in global free trade.

“Ramping up renewable energy such as solar is crucial to Biden’s goal of cutting U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 50% to 52% by 2030, versus 2005 levels, as well as decarbonizing the U.S. power grid by 2035.”
