Katie Schoolov writes in CNBC on a waste to electricity startup.
- Subaru, American Airlines, and Amazon are partnering with New Jersey-based Covanta to turn trash into electricity.
- At its Crows Landing, California plant, Covanta collects local waste and waste from companies and incinerates it, producing enough energy to power 18,000 homes.
- With the process produces carbon and toxic ash, it does not emit any methane.
- Waste to heat processes like these could play a pivotal role in alleviating waste management systems in the U.S.
“In Covanta’s energy recovery facility, waste is burned at temperatures around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. There are 21 miles of pipes around the combustor, where the intense heat converts water into steam that turns a turbine, which powers a generator.”
