New solar boxes could expand clean energy to include the world’s poorest regions

Derya Ozdemir of Interesting Engineering writes on PowerBlox, an innovation that is bringing clean energy to the developing world.

  • PowerBlox is a Swiss-based company that has developed “solar boxes” which store and generate energy with solar panels.
  • The boxes are small, only about the size of a portable cooler, but can provide enough energy to supply the majority of a home’s power needs.
  • These boxes could be pivotal to bringing power to rural areas and poor regions across the world, which would in turn raise living standards and accelerate human prosperity.

“In one recently electrified Mozambique village, people have used the invention to start selling items from cold drinks to fridges and offer customers mobile charging stations.”
