China promotes coal in setback for efforts to cut emissions

  • China, who accounts for 26.1% of global emissions, has announced that they will increase their coal production.
  • China is emitting more CO2 than the rest of the developed world combined and has thus far used climate rhetoric to buy political goodwill on the international stage.
  • This announcement is a significant setback to reaching global climate objectives.
  • Economic freedom, not central planning and communism, is the best pathway forward to lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

“Official plans call for boosting coal production capacity by 300 million tons this year, according to news reports. That is equal to 7% of last year’s output of 4.1 billion tons, which was an increase of 5.7% over 2020.”
