- The report states that in the worst case climate scenario, coastal disasters could cost as much as $100 billion annually, but in the best case scenario these disasters would cost $34 billion.
- America’s coastlines are home to roughly 30% of the nation’s population.
- Reducing climate risk along the coast will require principled investments in nature based solutions, reforming regulations to spur smart building and infrastructure practices, and energy innovation.
“The reports include an analysis of four federal expenditures that are expected to increase due to climate change, and they project future costs under several climate scenarios. Under each one, coastal disasters account for at least 75 percent of the total costs.”
