- A new report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimates, with a high degree of certainty, that sea levels along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts will rise 10-12 inches by 2050.
- NOAA says that emissions reductions now will do little to decrease flooding before 2050, but could reduce flood risk after mid-century.
- To adapt to rising sea levels we need responsible building and development practices along the coast, insurance premiums that accurately reflect flood risk, and investments in mitigation efforts.
“NOAA officials said the report builds on and supports previous findings from the IPCC and other entities about sea level rise, which experts say is caused primarily by melting ice sheets and glaciers as global temperatures increase.”
