States are reviving and upgrading consumer recycling — the nation must follow suit

Sally Greenberg writes in The Hill about state successes in recycling.

  • While recycling provides many environmental benefits only a small percentage of recyclable containers and packaging end up getting recycled in the United States.
  • States are tackling this problem by creating buyback programs that incentivize recycling.
  • In Oregon, a state with such a program, aluminum cans are recycled at a rate of 85%.
  • States across the country should consider implementing similar programs to improve recycling in the U.S.
