Tina Casey writes in Clean Technica about a new hydropower project in Kentucky.
- Kentucky will expand its clean energy portfolio with the construction of the Lewis Ridge Hydropower Pumped Storage project on an abandoned coal mine in Bell County.
- The idea behind hydropower pumped storage is simple: water is pumped uphill to a reservoir during a time of low electricity demand. When demand increases and extra energy is needed the stored water is released downhill to spin turbines and produce clean electricity.
- Kentucky has recently seen increased clean tech investments with Ford announcing a new EV battery manufacturing plant, and a massive solar project underway.
“Pumped hydro systems come in two basic types. Open systems send the stored water into the local waterway, where it continues upon its way after passing through the turbines. Closed systems re-use the same water over and over again.”
