Can farm waste help clean up the world’s dirty cargo ships?

Maria Gallucci of Grist writes on one startup that is turning farm waste into clean fuel.

  • WasteFuel, a startup that is being backed by shipping giant Maersk, is looking to turn farm waste such as corn husks and discarded wheat straw into clean “bio-methanol” for the shipping industry.
  • It is estimated that using this clean biofuel could reduce cargo ship emissions by 70 to 80%.
  • WasteFuel is aiming to open its first bio-methanol plant in the coming years.
  • The free market is voluntarily finding ways to meaningfully reduce emissions.

WasteFuel, is working to build facilities across the country that produce “bio-methanol” from corn husks, discarded wheat straw, and other agricultural scraps —  a low-carbon fuel produced in tiny volumes today.”
