Amy Dindal of Battelle writes on POLITICO about Battelle’s efforts to destroy harmful PFAS chemicals.
- Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are in just about everything, from furniture to firefighter foam.
- PFAS are often called forever chemicals because they build up in the environment and take hundreds of thousands of years to break down.
- Certain PFAS chemicals can contaminate drinking water and cause severe health issues.
- Fortunately, Battelle is researching several innovative ways to eliminate PFAS chemicals, benefiting the health of humans and the environment.
“Given the persistent properties and potential health risks of PFAS, there is a critical need for innovative technologies that can destroy these substances without transferring them elsewhere or creating harmful byproducts. Fortunately, researchers are working on exactly these types of breakthroughs. For example, Battelle, a global research and development organization, has been conducting comprehensive PFAS research for many years and has pioneered numerous assessment and mitigation solutions, including a new PFAS Annihilator destruction technology that will permanently remove PFAS from a site.”
