The House and Senate are back in Washington, and with the November midterms approaching, Congress has a narrow window to get legislation across the finish line. There’s still a few national priorities that are on the to-do list, and at the top should be delivering a comprehensive bipartisan permitting reform bill to the president’s desk. Fortunately, Senate Majority Leader Thune has said he will bring permitting reform to the floor once a bipartisan agreement is reached. That would be welcome news for American businesses and taxpayers who have spent years stuck amidst red tape.

Americans may not understand  the permitting process, but they certainly feel its consequences. Lengthy reviews and bureaucratic hurdles are a major reason America struggles to build the reliable energy infrastructure we need. The good news is that a stronger infrastructure  is entirely possible—but only if Congress is willing to confront the layers of federal regulations that stand in the way.
