USDA Nominee Vilsack Casts Farmers as Leaders in Climate Fight

Jacob Bunge and Jesse Newman of the Wall Street Journal write that USDA nominee Vilsack believes that farmers and ranchers are key leaders in the fight against climate change.

  • In order to address climate change, farmers and ranchers must be empowered to reduce emissions.
  • Emissions from the agriculture sector have gone down 11% since 1990.
  • The agriculture sector will continue to reduce emissions as farming methods become more efficient and technologically advances.

“’Farmers are prepared for it and anxious to do it,’ Mr. Vilsack said during a virtual confirmation hearing before the Senate agriculture committee. ‘If it’s voluntary, and incentive based, you will see farmers and ranchers cooperate extensively.'”
