How Texas’ electricity plan could change the grid

"Critics, however, warn that the PUC is pushing the state toward a market design rooted in the past instead of embracing renewable energy and accelerating efforts to cut electricity use when demand is highest. Some also say the proposal would raise power costs for customers. And powerful legislators question whether the PUC’s plan will offer the reliability its supporters promise."

"Lithium-based batteries are also critical for achieving U.S. climate objectives. The report states that without reliable access to lithium battery technology, the U.S. has no chance of meeting its 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal or ensuring an inclusive and socially responsible industry. With U.S. defense applications increasingly dependent on lithium-based batteries, the report warns of the national security risks in relying on batteries and battery components made abroad."

Inside the plans for the UK’s ‘first net-zero power plant’

"The power station is a joint venture between Sembcorp and 8 Rivers Capital, which invented the Allam-Fetvedt Cycle. The process, which has so far only been demonstrated at Net Power’s test facility in La Porte, Texas, burns 4% natural gas and 4% oxygen in a combustor alongside CO2. The combustion process results in 925ºC, 300bar CO2, which is fed through a turboexpander to generate power."

Seattle-area county plans ‘world leading’ sustainable aviation fuel R&D center

"One of sustainable aviation fuel’s biggest selling points is the fuel can replace jet fuel in existing aircraft, making it a quicker way to cut carbon emissions from flights. Other clean aviation strategies such as electric- or hydrogen-powered aircraft are still being developed and approved by regulators, and the aircraft in the works are smaller planes — not transcontinental jets."

Efforts to accelerate permitting could learn a thing or two from nuclear energy

"We believe that a fair and just siting and permitting process for energy infrastructure will result in more successful projects that can still be built fast. But designing good processes will depend on whether we’ve learned from past mistakes. A good siting process looks for places favorable toward a project, offers funding and trusted experts to help communities understand the impacts and risks and gives communities off-ramps to quit a project at various points before a go/no-go decision is made."

Wildfire startup puts AI-powered eyes in the forest to watch for new blazes and provide rapid alerts

"DNR is in discussion with established corporations and startups to explore solutions. That includes Google, which has promoted wildfire detection tools that are integrated into Google Maps, and Lockheed Martin, the defense industry juggernaut that is applying satellite tech to the wildfire space. Startup Data Blanket is talking with DNR regarding its AI-based drone system for surveying fires to map their perimeters and helping marshal resources. The Seattle company is doing demos with local fire departments."
